To All the Boys I've Loved Before Series Review
If you've read my book reviews and wrap ups before, then you'll know that my book tastes are generally limited to fantasy and historical fiction. There are occasions, however, when I am in the mood for a cutesy, YA contemporary. I was in this mood recently, and decided to pick up To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han. This is the first book of Han's trilogy of the same name, and it completely and utterly drew me in. I finished all three books of this series in about two days.
The series follows Lara Jean and her adventures and misadventures in young love. When Lara Jean was younger and felt herself to be in love, she would write a love letter. The love letters were never sent out, they just served as a way for her to get over her infatuations. Each letter was placed into a teal hat box given to her by her mother. However, one day Lara Jean discovers that each of those letters has been sent out. The rest of the series is Lara Jean dealing with the repercussions of those letters, finding first love, and experiencing funny high school shenanigans.
I really enjoyed this series, which was a little shocking given how different they are from what I normally gravitate to. They are absolutely hilarious, I don't remember the last time I laughed out loud so much from a book. There is also a really wonderful family dynamic that really makes the at times frilly stories seem believable. I really enjoyed reading about Lara Jean's older sister Margot, because she is my age and also went to the UK her first semester of college. Lara Jean's younger sister Kitty was also really fun to read about because she reminded me so much of my sister when she was that age. The girls' father Dr. Covey is also just one of the greatest literary dad's ever, definitely surpassing Mr. Bennet. in that regard. The rest of the characters in this series are also very loveable and fun as well.
By the third book, we see Lara Jean filling out college applications, dealing with rejection, thinking about leaving home, and worrying about other very relatable senior year things. It was bittersweet to read, and almost made me wish I had gone to Lara Jean's high school.
I would recommend this series to anyone in the mood for a funny and adorable high school romance. It is full of loveable characters, cookie recipes, sweet familial relations, and lots of funny cringe-worthy moments. I'm pretty sure I rated each book 4 or 5 stars on Goodreads.
