An Optimistic TBR
I know that we're already a week into June, so I definitely started planning this a little too late. Oh well, that's just how I role. In my last post I mentioned trying to make sure I didn't get into a reading slump, but I didn't account for the fact that I was falling into one as I was writing it. It's not that I don't want to read, I really do, but I'm kind of afraid to read the first book on my list as it's the final book of one of my favorite trilogies. Anyway, here are the books I hope to finish this month, probably in this order. I might not finish all of these, and I might read more. Who knows!
1. Morning Star, Pierce Brown.
This is the third novel in the Red Rising Trilogy. I would describe this trilogy as reminiscent of The Hunger Games but in space, more mature, and very new. It takes place very far in the future, but a lot of issues we see in today's society such as racism, sexism, classism, etc, are still prevalent. The writing style is very real and funny, but also very gruesome and violent. That might be something you want to keep in mind before starting this trilogy. I finished Golden Son last week, and immediately wanted to start this book as soon as I read the last word. However, I have become very unmotivated recently and I haven't read more than ten or twenty pages at a time. That is very unlike me! I'm just afraid of what might happen to my favorite characters!
2. The Magician's Land, Levi Grossman
Levi Grossman's books and I go way back, about four years. I have own The Magicians since the summer before freshman year of high school, and it is now the summer before my sophomore year of college. I probably started the first book five or six times over the past five years, but I only finished it this past February. I started reading it because I watched the TV adaptation on Netflix and loved it, and I used the books to fill the void between the show's first and second seasons. I finished it pretty quickly, read The Magician King fairly fast as well, but then I just could not get into The Magician's Land. I have been trying to read it since March, but I can't seem to get past the first chapter. I am not ashamed to say that I think the problem is I much prefer the show to the books, I think it's more believable, more fun, and honestly more magical. That being said, I really want this book to prove me wrong. If anything, I just want to finish it because I bought it, and I don't want it to just be a nice decoration.
3. Caraval, Author
I'm not exactly sure what this book is about, and I don't want to read the synopsis because I like not knowing much before I dive in. All I know is that it has to do with dark magic and a carnival. I got this book in an OwlCrate subscription box that was circus themed, so I suspect that this might be similar to The Night Circus. I haven't read that either, though, so I don't even know what that means. I'm excited to find out more about this book!
4. Edgar and Lucy, Victor Lodato
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway a few months ago, and I'm finally getting around to reading it. It has very good reviews, and is supposed to be a very moving story. Once again, I don't know much except for that there are family secrets surrounding a car accident. I'm pretty sure it's told from the perspective of a young boy, so I'm hoping for a really refreshing and thought provoking read.
5. To All the Boys I've Loved Before, Jenny Han
This book is on my list because I wanted to add something fun and light to break up the dark books that I've read and plan to read. I don't read a lot of contemporary books, especially YA contemporaries, but this has pretty good reviews and looks adorable. The premise is cheesy, a high school girl writes letters to all of her crushes, and she keeps them hidden in her room. One day, they accidentally get sent out and the girl has to deal with the consequences. I know it sounds silly, but I've heard that it's very fun, sweet, and perfect for the summer.
6. Red Queen, Victoria Aveyard
This is another book that's been sitting on my shelf for a while. I bought this book in St. Pancras Station in August, and I've read the first fifteen pages about six times. It sounds like a book I would enjoy, I just haven't been able to get into it yet. I think it's because I've been reading so many New Adult/Adult Fantasies that I just can't get back into the YA vibe. One of my best friends really likes this book, and we have very similar taste, so I know that I will enjoy this book. That is why I placed it after two contemporaries, one being a YA, so I can shake up what I'm used to and try to ease back in.
Bonus Book: Drums of Autumn, Diana Gabaldon (sorry no picture)
I have this on Audible and listen to it whenever I bake, clean, workout, basically anytime I can. I started reading this book while I was in Scotland, but I never finished it. I finished Voyager, the book before this, around two years ago, so I've been enjoying diving back into the Outlander world while waiting for the third season to come out this fall. I'm hoping to finish the series this summer, that's a lofty goal, I know, but if I just listen to the audiobooks while I work, I think I might be able to do it.
Comment below if you've read any of these books, or are inspired to read one of them this month. I'd love to chat about them, just no spoilers!
As you can see by the tabs, I've already starting reading this...
what you don't know is it's taken me ages to read literally 20 pages

I'm not a professional.

I'd love to have a pug named Edgar. I don't know why,
but I think that would be hilarious.

If I don't end up liking this book, nothing will stop
me from loving this cover.
